CAA holds electronic meeting

The Council on Academic Affairs meeting that was originally scheduled for today at 2 p.m. has been canceled due to lack of business on the agenda. This is the second week in a row where the committee’s meeting has been canceled.

“If there’s nothing on the agenda, we have an electronic meeting,” said Larry White, Business professor and CAA chair.

According the committee’s bylaws, the committee can have an electronic meeting when the Council determines that all items on the agenda are non-controversial.

How an electronic meeting works is that members log in to the meeting website at their leisure and vote on the items that need to be voted on. White said the meetings are a convenient way to get items put on the agenda when there is little else to discuss.

“We get it done and get (the items) on the agenda until we can meet in person,” White said.

The meeting opened on Wednesday at noon and closed at 4 p.m. today. White said the meetings follow a procedure similar to that of the “face to face” meetings, meaning the floor must be opened as closed as well as all movements to put items on the agenda must be seconded.

“These meetings are not meant as time to bring up controversial issues,” White said.

White said he was unsure of when the next meeting of the council will be because it simply depends on when things appear on the agenda.

“(The fall) is slower than the spring,” White said. “The college curriculum committees (whom report to the Council) are just getting started up. We know of some things going through those committees but it has to be approved by them before it gets to the Council.”

As of last week, White predicted the next “face to face” meeting of the CAA will be Sept. 23, but said depending on the agenda the meeting scheduled for Sept. 16 could also take place.

This is White’s third year on the CAA and first year as council chair, a position he was elected to at the end of last school year and will hold until the end of the current school year. White said while he does not have any major initiatives planned he is looking forward to improving the university.

“I’m looking forward to helping the University to continue to advance long term and make sure there is a smooth curriculum that a student can navigate through to get a good liberal education,” White said.
