Panthers post solid early season effort

The men’s and women’s indoor track team started off the season Saturday with a solid effort at the Early Bird invite at Lantz Fieldhouse.

The women’s team defeated Butler 99-44, Western Illinois 102-40 and lost to Indiana State 101-70. The men defeated Butler 120-18, Western Illinois 112-41 and narrowly lost to Indiana State 91-85.

Both the men’s and women’s teams picked up five individual wins at the event.

Eastern senior jumper Obe Eruteya won the high jump and the long jump.

In the high jump, Eruteya jumped 6 feet, 7 and three-quarters inches and in the triple jump he traveled 49 feet and 6 and a half inches.

Sophomore middle distance runner Justin Stewart won the 600-meter dash in 1 minute, 22.84 seconds.

Junior middle distance runner David Holm won the mile and finished in 4:16.53.

On the women’s side, sophomore hurdler Chandra Golden won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.87 seconds.

Junior sprinter Shawana Smith won the 200-meter dash in 25.58 seconds.

Sophomore thrower Kandace Arnold won the shot put and threw 44 feet, 10 and three-quarters inches.

Junior Nicole Walcott won the high jump, and junior jumper Jenna Uhe won the triple jump.
