Computer stolen from Student Life

A computer containing personal information, including the Social Security numbers, of all the members of Greek Life was stolen Wednesday night from the Office of Student Life.

Two hard drives, one desktop computer and a trashcan were stolen from the locked Student Life Office on the third floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The desktop computer contained names, Social Security numbers, home addresses and birthdates for all the current members of Eastern fraternities and sororities.

The program that contained the information was only installed on one computer and was password protected. The information is only accessed by Norma Taylor, the Student Life Office assistant.

The main Student Life staff members are the only individuals who have access to the office, said Ceci Brinker, director of Student Life.

The computer contained data on all members of Greek Life, not just the individuals living in the houses, and only data on those students who are active this semester, said Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs.

The students who graduated last semester or who are no longer active were already taken out of the program, Taylor said.

A letter was delivered Friday to the approximately 1,400 students whose information might be at risk. The letter contained three federal credit agencies that will give free yearly checks on credit reports.

Students should keep a close eye on any activity dealing with their financial accounts, Nadler said.

“We certainly have no reason to believe someone took the computer for the data but because the data was taken we have reason to be concerned,” Nadler said.

Brinker said the investigation is ongoing and was told not to comment.

The Federal Trade Commission Web site gives three agencies that give a free yearly credit report.
