u Eastern campus reacts to Cubs’ 9-6 loss to the Marlins in Game 7

The campus didn’t morph into Waveland Avenue early Wednesday night, but some students demonstrated their pride for the Chicago Cubs.

One member of Student Senate sprinted from his meeting to Taylor Hall and asked, in between hard breaths, “Are we winning yet?” Workers at the Student Recreation Center communicated the score over their CB radios.

Shortly before the eighth inning, two Cubs fans walked to Lawson Hall with T-shirts that said “We got Wood” on the back. The two said they made them that night.

The Cubs lost to the Florida Marlins in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series 9-6 Wednesday night.

Shortly before the ninth inning, Andy Farnetti turned his ball cap inside-out into a rally cap while watching the game in Thomas Hall lobby. He said he’s been a Cubs fan since he was 6 years old.

“I feel proud, but at the same time, I’m upset with them,” Farnetti, a freshman undecided major, said.

After catcher Paul Bako flied out for the last out, those watching the game in the Thomas Hall lobby went silent. The number of students watching the game on the big screen television in the Thomas Hall lobby fluctuated throughout the night.

Matt Rosenbaum, a junior elementary education major, who was working the front desk, said there were more people than usual in the lobby. But those numbers were down from the National League Divisional Series against the Atlanta Braves.

“There was no place to sit,” Rosenbaum said.

And for at least one more year, the Chicago Cubs’ seat in the World Series would hibernate another year.
