Career Day held for speech majors

The Student Activities Committee for Speech Communication on Wednesday will hold the annual Speech Communication Career Day.

The day will consist of various panels on the topics of health communication, broadcasting, sales and marketing and teaching, said Sherry Holladay, speech communication director and coordinator of the event.

The panels are open to all students interested in collecting information and designed to help speech communication majors determine what they will do with their degrees upon graduation. The panels will be held in various rooms on the third floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, beginning at 9 a.m and continuing through 3 p.m.

Some of the more prominent speakers that will be in attendance will be Keith Bliss, owner of Jitters and Bliss; Therese Kincede, owner of What’s Cookin’; Brett Schuette from the American Cancer Society and Patty Peterson, director of public relations at Sarah Bush Lincoln Memorial, Holladay said.

The majority of the speakers are Eastern alumni who will share their own personal experiences in finding a job requiring a speech communication degree, Holladay said.

Unlike any other career day, the event is meant to inform students rather than recruit them for certain jobs, Holladay said.

Brian Sowa, assistant professor of speech communication, and Holladay, are among some of the speech communication directors involved in coordinating this event. Sowa and Holladay, along with the speech department, are anticipating a large turn out.

“We are hoping to see all speech communication majors in attendance,” Holladay said. “Although we are aware this is the first time an occasion like this is taking place, we hope that students will be interested in coming to find out what this day is all about.”
