Holiday celebration will kick off tonight

Eastern will host its fourth annual holiday celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday from and 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the foyer of Old Main.

The celebration will feature four trees decorated by children of Mark Twain, Carl Sandburg, Jefferson and Ashmore elementary schools.

The event is an outreach opportunity to bring the Charleston community and the university together, Vicki Woodard, public information specialist, said.

“It is a great opportunity for children to come in and participate in an event like this,” Woodard said. “This year’s theme is centered around ‘Home for the Holidays.'”

The event will feature four Christmas trees, three small trees and one larger one, Woodard said. Two of the small trees are borrowed, but the big tree and the third small tree belong to the university.

The trees are decorated with lights and ornaments from previous years, as well as the additional ornaments made by the children.

“(The ornaments) are designed in construction paper with sequins and cotton, typical materials the children work with in school,” Woodard said.

The larger tree has a patriotic theme, sporting blue and silver ornaments with American flags and ribbons. According to a press release, this tree’s theme is “Our Home for the Holiday.” The children’s ornaments on this tree are red, white and blue.

Ornaments on other trees are themed with paper people, mittens and “candy cane-type ornaments,” Woodard said.

This event is a good one for the community, especially the children, to come in and see Old Main, Woodard said.

“It’s their chance to come inside the castle,” she said.

There is no admission charge for this event and students, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged to come share a little bit of the holiday spirit. Refreshments will be served at the event.
