Children to parade on the Square

A Halloween celebration in Charleston kicks off Saturday with the annual Kiwanis Halloween Parade at 3 p.m.

The parade starts at the corner of Sixth Street and Jackson Avenue, in front of City Hall, and from there it will take two laps around the Square, a press release stated.

The parade is a chance for local children to show off their costumes and compete with one another to see who has the best Halloween disguise.

The contest is broken up into seven to eight age groups and will be judged by Eastern’s Circle K International group. The grand prize for the best costume will be a $50 savings bond. Tthere will also be a $10 prize awarded to the top three costumes.

Along with individual competitors are theme groups, such as the cast from the Wizard of Oz, that participate in the parade.

The Kiwanis Club has been sponsoring the Halloween parade for about 50 years.
