Religion offers some comfort on anniversary

It was a night of song and spirituality.

Students and members of the community gathered last night in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union for the presentation “God and Sept. 11: Making Sense of the Senseless.”

The Association of Campus Ministers planned for three weeks, and the event had a turnout of over 350 people.

“If you search for God, you’ll find him. You’ll see he is next to you, where he has always been,” was the message the Rev. Tim Sales of the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship said to the crowd.

The presentation began with a song lead by the Rev. Ben Miller, a minister at the Christian Campus House, followed by words from the Rev. Tony Soper of the Wesley Foundation, the Rev. Rodger Songer of the Christian Campus House, Roy Lanham of the Newman Catholic Center and Sales.

“The best part was being able to come together with all different faiths and glorify God together,” said Melissa Wade, senior elementary education major.

Throughout the presentation, video clips of messages from family members of Sept. 11 victims were shown.

“What stuck out most in my mind was the video clip of the man saying he wishes he had God’s phone number. I think that desire is in a lot of people, and I believe they really can speak to him that easily,” said Danah Horner, minister at the Christian Campus House.

Miller also sang “Come Ye Sinners,” accompanied by a slide show of photographs from Sept. 11. The evening ended with prayer led by members of various ministries.

“I am really pleased with the involvement of just about every ministry,” Miller said.
