Multiple bands plan to ‘Lash’ out for free on celebration festivities

An American-Celtic rock band from Chicago and three local musical acts will rock the library quad Friday during festivities for Celebration: A Festival of the Arts.

The free concert will start at noon, and each act will play for an hour with half-hour breaks in between, said Katie Strejc, University Board main stage coordinator.

The Lash, whose Web site describes them as a Chicago-based group that have adopted an Irish sound and fused it with rock ‘n’ roll, will take the stage around 6 p.m.

The Lash uses a variety of instruments to produce “Celtic Mayhem,” which is the term they use to describe their live performance experience.

“They have a lot of energy, and they’re a lot of fun on stage,” Strecj said. “They are a good pub band-they sing about drinking and girls.”

The local acts scheduled to play are Ryan Groff, 11th and Cleveland and Touche.

Groff, an acoustic guitarist and singer, will begin his performance at noon. The former lead singer of the Last Resorts combines original material and cover songs into his modern-rock musical act.

At 3 p.m., local favorite 11th and Cleveland will play for the Celebration crowd.

The band plays a variety of rock tunes from the Allman Brothers to Phish.

“They have played at a lot of bars on campus such as Mike and Stan’s, Stix and the Uptowner,” Strejc said.

Touche, a fairly new Charleston-area band, is set to perform at 4:30 p.m. Touche, who has previously played at the Uptowner, has more of an alternative rock sound, similar to that of 311 and Sublime, Strejc said.
