Senate picks new leaders

The Faculty Senate named Anne Zahlan, English professor, as next year’s senate chair and Doug Brandt, physics professor, as vice chair.

Also, the senate named David Carpenter, English professor, as its secretary.

In other business, the senate appointed nine faculty to serve on the new Faculty Development Steering Committee.

Zahlan, who beat out Brandt for the position by an 8-7 vote, has served three non-consecutive terms on the senate, and next year will be the last year of her third term.

Brandt, who won in an uncontested race, has served two years on the senate and was the senate’s secretary from fall 2001 to spring 2002.

Carpenter, who also won in an uncontested race, is currently in his first year of his third non-consecutive term on the senate. He was chair from fall 1991 through spring 1992.

All terms last three years, and chairs, vice chairs and secretaries serve in that capacity for one year.

For the Faculty Development Steering Committee, the senate appointed Bud Fischer, associate biology professor and this year’s senate chair, and Assege Haile Mariam, assistant psychology professor, to represent the College of Sciences.

Bonnie Irwin, associate English professor, and Bailey Young, history professor and current senate member, will represent the College of Arts and Humanities.

Senate member John Pommier, associate recreation administration professor, and Marylin Lisowski, professor of early childhood, elementary and middle level education, were chosen to represent the College of Educational and Professional Studies.
