More than $4,000 in belongings stolen from Ford

More than $4,000 worth of personal items were allegedly stolen from a student in Ford Hall on Saturday.

Melissa Stevens, a junior music education major, said she left her room at 112 Ford Hall on Saturday at 11 a.m., making sure the door was locked behind her. When she returned at 1 p.m. that day, she found her door slightly ajar and her room ransacked, a police report said.

“All of my binders and books were all over,” she said. “It was obvious someone had been searching for something.”

A police report stated that a Breitlig Chronomet watch valued at $4,000, a Yamaha clarinet worth $500 and 15 compact discs valued at over $150 were missing from the room and Stevens said a diamond tennis bracelet worth $750 was also unaccounted for.

While Stevens said the compact discs were easily replaceable, the other items held sentimental value.

She said the diamond tennis bracelet was a high school graduation present from her parents, the watch was an engagement present for her fiance and the clarinet was the first one she ever owned.

“The bracelet and the watch have sentimental value,” she said.

According to the police report, Stevens’s room was littered with clothing, books and other items and her dresser drawers were opened and in disarray “as though they were looking for something.”

The bed was also moved from along the east wall to the center of the room and mattress and box springs were also askew.

The lock on Stevens’s room was still working and not damaged, and no scratches or scars were found on the door to suggest it had been pried open, the police report stated.

Stevens said she did not know any possible suspects and could not provide any motive.

Art Mitchell, a University Police Department officer, said the police have no suspects yet, but the incident is under investigation.
