Walk will benefit Haiti, non-violence

Anyone who is concerned and wishes to help alleviate even just a small portion of the world’s afflictions of poverty and violence can double knot their walking shoes and join the the Walk for Non-Violence at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The sixth annual three-and-a-half mile Walk for Non-Violence is co-sponsored by members of the Haiti Connection and the Newman Catholic Center, where the walk will begin.

The walk will also end at the Newman Catholic Center, and a free lunch for all walkers will be provided.

The sponsors are encouraging Recognized Student Organizations, businesses and individuals to participate in this year’s walk.

Eighty percent of the money raised will go to Barasaw, Haiti, where the Haiti Connection will build a corn mill. The other 20 percent will go to Sexual Assault Counseling and Information Services, located in the Lawson Hall basement.

“Money raised will go towards building the corn mill, which will help (Haitians) raise money for sending their kids to school,” said Mike Smeltzer, senior speech communication major and co-chair of the walk.

The group hopes to raise $2,500, Smeltzer said. Those who wish to help can either make a donation to the Haiti Connection, stop by the Newman Center and pick up a walk form, or sponsor someone walking in the event.

“It’s a win-win situation,” says Smeltzer. “It’s a way to get in shape, help people, and alleviate poverty in Haiti.”
