Jazz Combos will perform last show at Friends & Co.

For a change of pace, the Eastern Jazz Combos will host their final performance of the semester Tuesday at Friends & Co., 509 Van Buren Ave.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature three combos playing for around 30 minutes each, said Michael Stryker, instructor in jazz studies.

Stryker said the “club setting” of Friends and Company is the ideal place for this last performance, and that it benefits the students to play at a different venue.

“They will be playing in a situation they could find themselves playing in when they graduate,” Stryker said.

This is the third semester the EIU Jazz Combo Program has held its final performance at Friends and Company, Stryker said.

The group used to play at The Rathskellar, but that space is no longer available.

The combos are expected to play music by Oliver Nelson, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Mingus and many others. Included in the performance will be Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage,” “Mingus,” “Nostalgia in Times Square” and Nelson’s “Stolen Moments,” a press release said.

Anyone is welcome to attend the free performance. For more information, contact Stryker at 581-6656.
