Development code topic of meeting

Students and residents will have the chance to be educated about the proposed rules and regulations of living in Charleston Tuesday night.

A presentation of the Unified Development Code will be held at 6 p.m. in Baker Gymnasium at Charleston High School with the intention to inform the public of the updated and new zoning regulations, Dean Barber, city manager, said Monday.

The Unified Development Code “contains all of our zoning ordinances,” and the proposed code “brings existing code up to date and expands on ordinances we already had,” Barber said.

In the code, it details about “what types of uses and structures are allowed in the different areas of town” and specifies what new developments are allowed.

Although the city intends to hold only one presentation Barber said they will hold another presentation the following night on Wednesday to finish up.

“It is our intention to finish everything the first night,” he said.

Mayor Dan Cougill and other city officials will be in attendance to answer questions Barber said, however; a public hearing will be held for residents to voice concern regarding the code at a later date. A date for that hearing has not yet been set.
