Sigma Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Chi victorious

Ten teams dueled for the title of tugs champion Saturday at the Campus Pond.

The annual Greek Week festivity involves campus fraternity and sorority teams tugging a rope over the Campus Pond. The object of the sport is to pull the opposing team into the muddy pond to win bragging rights for the team’s fraternity or sorority.

First place winners include Sigma Pi for little men’s tugs, Alpha Phi for women’s tugs and Delta Chi for big men’s tugs.

For the little man championships, which involved Sigma Pi versus Delta Chi, the tug went back and forth twice, and Sigma Pi won the tough battle in 5:23 minutes.

“When a tug gets into that amount of time, it just matters who wants it more,” Jason Pry, senior health studies major and tugger for Sigma Pi, said.

The women’s division competition was also exciting.

For the third place title, the ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha defeated Alpha Sigma Tau in 42.9 seconds, which was the fastest tugging time of the day.

Following the victory of Alpha Sigma Alpha, the women of Alpha Phi faced off against Sigma Kappa.

Alpha Phi and Sigma Kappa battled for a long time, and the victory was finally granted to Alpha Phi. As the gunshot sounded to end the tugging, all of the competitors collapsed in exhaustion.

“After three months of practicing, the only thing that pays off is winning,” Natalie Pavone, senior health education major and tugger for Alpha Phi, said.

The last tug of the day was the big men of Delta Chi versus Lambda Chi Alpha. In 2:38 minutes, Delta Chi defeated Lambda Chi Alpha.

“We were told just to tug, block out the crowd and everything else should be second nature,” Andrew Stevens, junior business finance major and tugger for Delta Chi, said.
