Second dean candidate on campus this week

The second of four candidates for dean of the College of Educational and Professional Studies visits campus Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for interviews with various university administrators and organizations.

The candidate, David A. England, is currently the dean of the College of Education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. England has also held teaching positions at Oklahoma State University and was associate dean for academic affairs at Louisiana State University.

He received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in secondary education at Indiana University.

In his application letter to Eastern, England mentioned two projects at Western Michigan he would like to implement here: first, a coordinated university-recognized and university-wide governance structure for all professional education programs, and second, a strong partnership with the local public school district. In Michigan, the partnership is called Collaborative for Innovation and Teaching Excellence, which has representatives from the university, the public schools, teacher organizations, foundations and the local business community.

England wrote that he is only interested in a school that rewards energy and vision in pursuit of educational excellence.

England begins his interviews on Monday at a dinner with the search committee.

On Tuesday, he will tour the campus, meeting with deans, chairs and interim President Lou Hencken. There will also be an open meeting with faculty, staff and students at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in room 2821 of Lantz Arena.

The process will conclude on Wednesday with a tour of the Charleston community.

Others left to interview for the position are Charles Rohn, associate professor of educational administration at Eastern, and Jo-Anne Evans Coleman, vice president for academic and student affairs at Northwestern Health Services University in Bloomington, Minn.
