King, Queen named at start of Greek Week

Campus sororities and fraternities “Let the Games Begin” Saturday night with the coronation of this year’s king and queen, which was held during the Airband competition for the beginning of Greek week.

Kyle Perry, who represented Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, was crowned this year’s king and Katie Schlemmer of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority won the queen title.

Perry, a junior finance major from Charleston, has dedicated much of his time to improving Sigma Phi Epsilon as well as the greek community. He held two offices for interfraternity council and one office in his own chapter.

Perry has been involved in the advertising department of The Daily Eastern News and commits himself to community service organizations.

“This is an honor, and it’s exciting,” Perry said.

Schlemmer, an active member of her sorority and campus life, is a junior speech communication major from Metamora. She is presently on the Panhellenic Council, is chair of the campus recreation board and was the student ambassador for the president of the university.

Schlemmer said the ceremony, which was held during the intermission for the airband competition, had a great atmosphere and was a lot of fun.

“I was very, very surprised,” said Schlemmer. “It’s an honor to represent Alpha Gamma Delta and the Greek community.”

Julie Ferguson of Sigma Kappa was the first runner up in the race for queen, and Robert Frederickson of Sigma Pi was the first runner up for king.

“I was thrilled,” Ferguson said. “I felt like all the candidates were overqualified to win.”
