James Taylor, Sept. 11 take top nods at Greek Sing

Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority took home top honors for Greek sing this year with their star-spangled tribute to the tragedy of Sept. 11, while the Sigma Phi Epsilon won in the men’s formal category.

Greek Sing took place Saturday at Lantz Arena.

The women of Sigma Sigma Sigma chose the Sept. 11 theme to give the audience a performance they would be able to feel, said Cortney Mullin, Greek sing director for Sigma Sigma Sigma.

“We really touched the crowd,” Mullin said.

All the women wore New York Fire Department and New York Police Department T-shirts, except for one who donned a costume of the statue of liberty, to match their patriotic theme, Mullin said.

The Sigma Sigma Sigma women performed the songs “I Will Remember You” by Sara Maclachlan, “The Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler and the funeral tune “In Remembrance.” Mullin said she wrote the melodies to the songs herself for the performance.

“All the songs really meant something to each girl,” Mullin said.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity won the formal category with their James Taylor theme.

Kyle Perry, Sigma Phi Epsilon director for Greek sing, said he chose the James Taylor theme because Taylor was one of his favorite musicians, and the rest of the members liked the idea.

For the competition, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon wore traditional outfits of a white shirts and khakis to give their all-James Taylor performance, Perry said.

Perry said he enjoyed Greek sing because it was a chance for Sigma Phi Epsilon to get their chapter noticed and allow the community to see the positive activities they do.

Despite the tough competition for Greek sing, Perry said the men in the fraternity enjoyed coming out on top.

“The competition was very stiff and very good, but maybe our musicality was better,” Perry said.

Kappa Delta sorority won second place and Alpha Sigma Tau won third place in the women’s Greek Sing competition. Lambda Chi Alpha won second place and Delta Chi won third place in the men’s formal competition.

In the men’s informal Greek sing category, only the Sigma Nu and Sigma Pi fraternities participated. Sigma Nu came in first place and Sigma Pi came in second place in the category.
