‘Get Lucky’ rocks McAfee

Over 600 screaming, jumping and body surfing students swamped McAfee Gym Wednesday to see two premier Chicago area bands.

Lucky Boys Confusion and Penny and the Loafers played “Get Lucky Fest,” the first concert held in McAfee since the building stopped being the temporary home of Eastern’s library earlier this year.

Katie Strejc, mainstage coordinator for the University Board, said she hopes to make a spring concert in McAfee Gym an annual event.

“Every year, we want to bring a big-city band here,” she said.

Strejc also said it is possible that McAfee will be used on a regular basis for concerts and other events.

“We’ve used it before,” she said. “We’re hoping to use it again.”

UB Vice Chair Caleb Judy estimated 625 tickets were sold for the concert, a number he called “very good.”

“I expected a lot more (people),” Judy said, “but it’s a good turnout for a Wednesday night.”

Jason Espinoza, the bassist for Penny and the Loafers, said the concert was the largest he has ever seen in this region.

“U of I is the only thing that compares,” he said.

When asked, most students said they liked Wednesday’s concert.

“It’s pretty good,” said Matt Johnson, a junior therapeutic recreation major. “It’s fun.”

Kara Cromes, a freshman business marketing major, said she liked Penny and the Loafers.
