UB ready to rock with headliners Lucky Boys Confusion

The University Board will host two of Chicago’s premiere bands Wednesday night during the “Get Lucky Fest.”

Opening act Penny and the Loafers will perform at 7 p.m., followed by headliners Lucky Boys Confusion, in the McAfee Gymnasium.

The concert is the UB’s largest mainstage event ever, Katie Strejc, UB’s mainstage coordinator and a senior speech communication major, said Monday.

Lucky Boys Confusion is a blend of punk, hip-hop and reggae, Strejc said. LBC’s influences include The Beastie Boys, 311 and Sublime.

In 2000 LBC was signed by Elektra Entertainment, the label home to bands P.O.D and Less Than Jake, she mentioned.

Penny and the Loafers is a mix of “ska and punk,” Strejc said. “Crystal Memories,” the band’s hit single, is played on many local Chicago radio stations, she said.

Penny and the Loafers played last semester in 7th Street Underground and generated a “good turnout,” Strejc said.

“(The concert) is a great time to catch two up-and-coming bands before they make it big,” she said.

Strejc said to break even, the UB must sell 900 tickets. At $5 each, Strejc said the price of a ticket is unbeatable.

“LBC and Penny and the Loafers played together in Champaign at $15 per ticket,” she said. “At this price, you’re getting two bands for the price of not even one.”

Strejc said doors will open at 6 p.m. Prior to this time, WEIU will pass out numerous CDs from various artists in front of McAfee.

“You don’t even have to come to the concert to get a CD,” Strejc said. “You can get one just by walking to class.”

Although tickets are selling “pretty well,” Strejc said tickets will be available at the door.
