‘Spectacular’ to bring more excitement to track finals

The “Spring Spectacular” will commence this spring during the coming annual Illinois High School Association track finals in Charleston.

The Spectacular is a series of track theme events that will be held in a fenced off area just southwest of O’Brien Field.

“It was a request from the IHSA to add a little bit more to (the track finals),” Cindy Titus, director of the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, said.

The “Spectacular” was approved Friday during the commerce’s monthly luncheon. The idea was spawned from the success of “The March Madness Experience,” a similar event that is held during the IHSA basketball finals in Peoria.

“It’s all about drawing more attention to the state track finals,” Titus said.

Events including the bungee run, and the adrenaline run will be held inside large inflatable “moon walks,” she said. There will also be competitive events including a frisbee toss and an obstacle course.

“The events are geared toward younger people, but adults can certainly do it,” Titus said.

The event is free admission and will be funded by Charleston and Mattoon through sponsorships. For agreeing to hold the Spectacular, the IHSA extended Eastern’s contract to host the track finals through 2007, she said.

In addition, the events will attract more people which will give EIU more exposure.

“It really puts Charleston on the map, and helps with recruitment efforts,” Titus said.

Over the IHSA’s two weekends, May 17th & 18th for the girls finals, and May 24th and 25th for boys, visitors are expected to spend between $1 million and $2 million at local businesses, Titus said.
