Worthington Inn suffers damage during social event

A Charleston hotel is assessing its damages after police had to be called when attendees of a fraternity function Saturday night allegedly stole alcohol and damaged property.

Attendees of a Sigma Phi Epsilon semiformal Saturday allegedly became unruly after the banquet facility’s bar closed, Pat Stuart, banquet manager at the Best Western Worthington Inn, 920 W. Lincoln Ave., said Sunday.

Shortly after 11:15 p.m., bartenders serving the crowd of about 100 announced a last call. The bar then became “surrounded” Stuart said, and five bottles of alcohol, four of which were later recovered, were apparently stolen.

“I’ve never had a function that was quite like this,” she said. “All of the other functions I’ve had with the university with sororities and fraternities were never like this. This was a first.”

A hotel employee apparently discovered the fifth liquor bottle empty in a men’s restroom where another surprise was found, Stuart said. Apparently a couple was discovered having sex in the restroom, where most of the property damage allegedly occurred.

Robert Dudolski, Eastern’s director of Greek Life, said a manager from the Worthington Inn contacted him Sunday. Dudolski said he plans to meet with members of Sigma Phi Epsilon Monday morning to discuss a possible plan of disciplinary action.

“I still have lot of information I need to gather,” he said Sunday. “Basically the fraternity has never really had any issues before.”

A baby changing table, soap dispenser and toilet-paper dispenser in the men’s restroom were all damaged along with a hotel water fountain, Stuart said.

“The bathroom was a disaster,” she explained.

In addition two plastic Easter egg decorations were stolen and the banquet hall floor was littered with broken glass, Stuart said.

“They didn’t know what a table was,” she said. “It was the floor.”

Guests began arriving at the Worthington Inn around 9 p.m., an hour after the semiformal was scheduled to begin, Stuart said. The first two bus loads that arrived did not present a problem, however, Stuart said, the third bus load appeared to have been drinking prior to the function.

“Evidently they had been somewhere else drinking before here,” Stuart said.

Dudolski said if fraternity members had been drinking at a party prior to the function, they could face discipline. Dudolski said to meet insurance standards any party should have been registered with the university. No such party had been registered before Saturday’s semiformal.

Stuart said the hotel will contact its insurance company Monday so the damage can be assessed. She said the Worthington Inn plans to seek damages and the contract Sigma Phi Epsilon signed with the hotel stipulates that guests are responsible for any damage done to property.

The Charleston Police were called shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Stuart said. She said two guests were arrested, one for indecent exposure. The officers who responded to the call were not available for comment Sunday.

Telephone messages left Sunday for Joseph Mark, Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter president, and other members of the fraternity were not returned.
