Student Government will be hosting its semi-annual Spoken Word open mic night Tuesday.

The event, sponsored by the Student Government Diversity Affairs Committee, will take place Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at 7th Street Underground in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The Spoken Word is an open mic night, and prizes will be awarded to first through third place winners, Tim Edwards, Diversity Affairs Committee member, said Monday.

The event will also give students a chance to express their talents, Diversity Affairs Committee Chair Shonda Clancy said Sunday.

Student Government puts on the event once a semester to give students a chance to “feel free to openly express themselves at a positive event specifically geared toward students,” Clancy said.

A variety of talents are expected to be attend, Clancy said.

Anyone who is not yet signed up can do so at 6 p.m. in 7th Street Underground, Edwards said.

“We are expecting a good turnout in comparison to last year’s talent contest,” Clancy said. “My committee is really excited by this event, and hopes that everyone enjoys themselves and are inspired.”

Edwards said the Outlaw Recognized Student Organized will be sponsoring giveaways to people in attendance.

“Other highlights of the event include a performance by The Free Style Circle, a new RSO composed of students with a variety of talents,” he added.

All students are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
