Student arrested for campus vandalism

One graduate art student may have not been able to wait until the new Doudna Fine Arts Center opens to see his work displayed publicly.

A graduate art student was arrested over spring break for allegedly spray painting graffiti on more than 20 campus locations.

Frank J. Kuhl, 27, of 16 W. Polk Street was arrested March 13 on the charge of criminal defacement of property, police reports stated.

Kuhl was seen by an Eastern employee who then called the University Police Department which made the arrest at 5:30 a.m., Vicki Woodard of Media Relations said Tuesday.

More than 20 locations were spray painted including Old Main, Life Science Building, Thomas Hall and the steam plant, as well as various sidewalks, fences and dumpsters throughout campus, Woodard said.

So far, Woodard said the damages are an estimated $1,800.

The graffiti was in black paint and was not gang related, was of no specific design or nothing in particular was represented, Woodard said.

Glenn Hild, chair of the art department, said Tuesday “I haven’t seen it happen in his artwork.”

“It was an unfortunate incident,” he said. “I was surprised that it happened.

“He wasn’t doing it in his regular studies. He seemed like a nice enough kid.”

Attempts to contact Kuhl were unsuccessful.
