Rose blooms for GOP nomination

Thanks to a landslide victory in Coles County, Chapin Rose captured the Republican nomination for state representative from the 110th District Tuesday, topping three challengers.

With 95 of 99 precincts reporting, Rose, currently the senior assistant state’s attorney in Champaign County, polled 48 percent of the vote. His main challenger, former Arcola mayor Lynda Warfel Fishel, won 25 percent of the vote.

Lawyer Ronald Hunt received 17 percent of the vote, while Milliken University professor Gerald Smith polled 10 percent.

Rose won four of the five counties in the 110th District. Coles, Piatt, Edgar and Champaign counties all voted Rose, while Fishel won her home county of Douglas with 37 percent of the vote.

Rose will now go on to face Mattoon legal assistant John Hayden, a Democrat, in the Nov. 5 general election.

Speaking to a group of volunteers Tuesday night in a law office across from the Coles County Courthouse, Rose said his campaign was just getting started.

“Our work begins tomorrow,” Rose said. “We’ve got to win in November.”

Rose credited his victory in particular to a overwhelming victory in Coles County, where he won 69 percent of the vote.

“I think the strong showing in Coles County underscores our support here,” Rose said.

This support has led Rose to be “very optimistic” about his chances in the general election versus Hayden, he said.

“I look forward to matching up with John,” he said. “I’m very excited to welcome him in.”
