Madigan, Birkett capture top legal spots for parties

State Sen. Lisa Madigan, D-Chicago, and State’s Attorney Joe Birkett, R- DuPage County, won Tuesday night’s primaries for attorney general and will soon begin campaigning against each other for November’s general election.

Madigan, the daughter of House Speaker, Michael Madigan, defeated fellow Democrat John Schmidt. The daughter of the Democratic Party chair captured 59 percent of the vote compared with 41 percent of for Schmidt.

“I knew what I was up against,” he said Tuesday night. “(Our campaign faced) a massive power of clout and money of the Democratic Party and we weren’t able to overcome it.”

For the GOP Birkett defeated Republican competitor Bob Coleman in a landslide. He captured 64 percent of the primary vote compared to 36 percent for Coleman.

“We’re very happy with the results,” Paul Darrah, a press secretary for the candidate said Tuesday. “The voters came through for us. Three out of four selected Joe and that sends out the message. The voters came out across the board, from left to right.

“We’re looking forward to working on the election this fall.”
