Livsey named Ms. Fitness again, Jones wins Mr. EIU

Eight students dared to show it all Saturday night, in pursuit of the Mr. EIU/ Ms. Fitness title.

Close to 250 people packed into the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union at 7 p.m. Saturday to watch these eight individuals show off all of their hard work.

The men’s competition consisted of seven contestants, divided into three weight classes, with one winner from each.

Brandon Turner, a senior biological science major, showed that good things can come in small packages by winning the Bantam (light weight) Division trophy. Kevin Jones, physical education major, took the Middle Division trophy and Eric Edwards, undeclared major, won the Light Heavy Division trophy.

The three well-chiseled men then went head-to-head for the title of Mr. EIU. In the final round, the judges, who each had previous pageant experience, were a little more scrutinizing.

Kevin Jones walked away triumphant, taking home the title of Mr. EIU 2002. Jones has been training for over two-and-a-half years; his motivation: “I wanted to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger,” he said.

Stephanie Livsey took the title of Ms. Fitness for the second year in a row. Livsey, who has always been athletic, says that she began training once she got to college and has been doing so for almost four years. And while she says that it is not necessarily more difficult for women, it is still a tough job.

“It is difficult. It’s a lot of dieting and a lot of mental preparation,” Livsey explained.
