New delays accompany entrance

Further obstacles in the installation of Booth Library’s south entrance will delay the completion date for its opening indefinitely.

The projected completion date of the entryway was scheduled for Feb. 18; however, an unidentified problem with the delivery of the entrance’s stairwell has caused a delay in the library’s final completion, said Carol Strode, interim director of Facilities Planning and Management. The renovation and restoration project has spanned 30 months and has cost $21 million.

Strode said a contracted company was scheduled to deliver the steps to the south entrance Feb. 18, but the company delayed that date because they were “still manufacturing them.” She said the stairwell is supposed to be delivered today. The contracted company was hired by the Williams Brothers, the company hired by the university to renovate the library.

Strode said there is no set completion date for the south entrance, and workers have been installing “as much wood trim as they can” to the entrance, but some work is dependent on the staircase installation.

The library’s original completion date was scheduled for the south entrance to be accessible on Jan. 7.

However, a contractual change in the design of the entrance forced the university to delay the opening of the library.

As a result of the redesign of the south entrance, contractors projected a six to eight week period before the completion of the entryway. The university opened the north entrance on Feb. 14, when Booth officially reopened its doors.

In addition to the south entrance, work is still being done to the atrium windows, and Strode said carpet in the atrium is scheduled to be laid March 1. A missing window in the atrium is planned to be delivered March 8 and installed three to four days afterward.

On the other end of Booth, tile is being laid in the north entrance and Strode said all completion dates for ongoing projects in the library are “tentative.”
