Grand opening made official with ribbon cutting ceremony

After pushing back the ceremony and the correct carpet in place, the campus bowling alley ribbon cutting will take place Thursday.

The grand opening for the bowling alley is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

The ceremony will include the introduction of the new equipment, refreshments and drawings for giveaways , Josh Hudson, bowling alley employee, said Wednesday.

Originally, the ribbon cutting was scheduled for Jan. 18, but a mistake in carpeting forced the date back. The carpet that was delivered Jan. 21 was a “space voyage” design instead of “galactic bowl,” Tim Taflinger, Union bowling and billiard center manager, said at the time.

Although the grand opening is today, the bowling alley has been open and accessible since Jan. 15. It had been undergoing renovation since early spring semester 2001, when the renovation of the new food court began.

“Business has been really great lately,” Hudson said. “People are happy it’s open again.”

New additions to the bowling alley include resurfaced lanes, carpeting, new pin setters and new arcade games. In addition, black lights reactive bowling balls for glow bowling, will be available this summer, Hudson said.

Hudson said, new electronic scoring, with animations and how to pick up spares.
