Students learn to organize their lives

Students learned how to organize their study habits at a free workshop at Ninth Street Hall Wednesday afternoon.

The workshop titled “Become More Organized,” was part of the Learning Assistance Center’s 30-minute Student Workshop Series. Mark May, assistant director of the Academic Advising Center, presented the workshop, which was attended by four students.

May recommended setting a fixed schedule including time for sleep, meals, classes, work and any other things students do on a weekly basis. May stressed the importance of students staying healthy by getting quality sleep, eating regular meals and exercising often. He said that staying healthy makes organization easier.

May began the workshop by asking the students what type of organization they needed help with and then gave tips on time management and effective study habits. May said that the first step in managing time should be to “set your priorities and establish what your goals are.”

Some of May’s other recommendations include using a day planner or to-do list, and keeping a calendar with the dates of tests and assignments on it. May suggested that if students make studying a regular habit it will be easier for them.

Tanisia Crowder, a freshman family and consumer sciences major who attended the workshop, said she plans to “write down the things I need to do and make sure it’s somewhere I can see it.”

Another student in attendance, Pat Mahoney, freshman family and consumer science major, said, “I think I’m pretty well organized already”, but added that he found the workshop helpful.
