Job fair to present opportunities

The Spring Career Day Job Fair will offer students of 58 different majors a chance to learn more about their chosen fields and an opportunity to test the job market.

The job fair is scheduled for Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union ballrooms.

Linda Moore, interim director of Career Services, said the job fair is a good preparatory tool for those who will soon enter the job market.

Moore also said that major corporations like Standard and Poor, ADM, Hamilton and Boos, Bank One, Neiman Marcus, Caterpillar, State Farm and Rent-a-Car will be present to recruit students.

“These companies are known to hire many college students fresh out of college,” Moore said.

She also mentioned that attending job fairs provides good practice interviewing, which “allows students to develop skills that make them recruitable.”

Moore said the job fair is for all students, not just upperclassmen.

Underclassmen who are not looking to enter the job market in the future can obtain information concerning their majors at the fair, Moore said.

“Freshmen should attend to get prepared for their major, see what internships are available and what they need to compete in the job market,” she said.

However, underclassmen still need to take the fair seriously.

“No jeans and flip flops,” Moore said. “Students want to look as professional as possible.”

Career Services advises students to show up early in professional attire with 20 to 30 copies of their resume, pens and paper to take down information, a portfolio and no backpack.
