Forum to address faculty development

Members of Eastern’s faculty will gather to discuss issues of faculty development Tuesday at a forum titled “Faculty Development at Eastern: Strengths, Needs, Challenges.”

The forum, organized by the Faculty Senate, will aim to tackle issues of how to best utilize the strengths of Eastern and its faculty, providing assistance to faculty members at various career stages and helping faculty balance and fulfill their myriad of roles.

Opening remarks and discussion will take place in the Charleston/Mattoon Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union and breakout sessions will move into the Casey and Greenup rooms in the Union.

The Faculty Senate typically holds their forum during the fall semester, but since the university held another fall forum on recruitment and retention, the senate opted to hold theirs in spring, said Faculty Senate Chair Bud Fischer, biological sciences professor.

Last year’s forum focused on technology, Fischer said. This year, the goals of the forum include an open discussion among faculty and others who attend on the role of faculty development at Eastern and what programs and other assistance are needed.

“We’d also like to end with recommendations that we can send to the administration (about faculty retention),” Fischer said.

The term “faculty retention” refers to any kind of service or program that aids faculty in their mission, be that teaching, service or research, Fischer said.

The forum is open to anyone on campus.
