AB bails UB out of Cirque Eos debt

The Apportionment Board Thursday allocated $17,586.64 to the University Board to cover the debt from Cirque Eos at last semester’s Family Weekend.

The UB asked for three separate allocations to be applied to the debt. The first was for $12,000 that had previously been used to pay their graduate assistants to be transferred to their concert budget, UB Chair Stephanie Skrzypek said. The UB was unable to fill the graduate assistant position this year.

Additionally $5,586.64 was requested and allocated from the AB reserve account to pay off the debt incurred by the Cirque Eos, Skrzypek said.

The loss was incurred because only half of the tickets expected to sell actually sold, Caleb Judy, UB vice chair said Thursday.

Proposals passed with a vote of 7-0 to cover the Cirque Eos debt.

To avoid these unexpected debts in the future the UB is trying to get a concert fee added on to student fees, Skrzypek said. This will be determined by the result of elections taking place Feb. 5 and 6.

The UB requested a third allocation of $2,669.90 to help with the cost of productions that the UB sponsors, Judy said. Additional costs have risen that were not anticipated because of the increased number of shows for students, Skrzypek said. Also, the production coordinator is granted a tuition waver that was not budgeted for this semester, Judy said. This proposal also passed with a vote of 6-1.

Joe Robbins, speaker of the Student Senate, proposed an allocation of $2,100 in order to send Jessica Catto, student vice president for academic affairs, Student Body President Hugh O’Hara, and himself to the Conference on Student Government Associations Feb. 23 through 26 at Texas A&M University. The three will be attending as presenters, and three other senate members are attending, to be funded through Student Senate funds. AB approved the proposal by a 6-1 vote.

The $2,100 will cover air fare and registration fees to the conference.
