Going Home

A late night La Bamba’s run turned ugly Tuesday night, when the restaurant’s side window was shattered, resulting in a police chase through Eastern’s campus.

An argument between two unidentified males turned sour around 2 a.m. Tuesday night when they flew through a window of La Bamba Mexican Restaurant, 1415 S. Fourth St., Joel Nonato, manager of La Bamba’s, said Wednesday.

Nonato said he called the Charleston Police Department right after the incident occurred.

Shortly after, the University Police Department began providing descriptions of the two men to various residence hall assistants.

Erin McVicker, a Lincoln Hall night assistant, said a UPD officer told her not to approach the individuals if she saw them because they “might” be carrying knives.

McVicker said she began keeping on eye out for the individuals and saw one possible suspect hiding in bushes near Lincoln Hall.

Kevin Leverence, a Pemberton Hall night assistant, said he was looking out of Pemberton Hall that night and saw a man running from police.

He said the man he observed was apprehended by university police officers in front of Booth Library.

Leverence, who was also informed by the UPD to keep on eye out for the offenders, said a UPD officer told him the men were involved in the altercation at La Bamba earlier.

Nonato said the offenders were taken to the hospital Wednesday night for wounds caused by the broken window.

UPD Chief Adam Due said one suspect was apprehended, but he said the UPD was only assisting in the chase and the suspect was turned over to the Charleston Police Department, which is handling the investigation.

Roger Cunningham, assistant Charleston police chief, said Wednesday the incident is still under investigation and no one has been arrested.

“We have to figure out if a crime was committed,” he said. “I’m hoping we’ll have this concluded quickly.”

He refused to provide any details concerning the incident.

Nonato said he will be pressing charges against the perpetrators for the cost to replace the window once they are arrested.
