Committee discusses planning for 7th Street Underground

Future uses of the 7th Street Underground facility were discussed by the 7th Street Underground Planning Committee Thursday.

Christian Person and Adam Lunt of SONOR are working on the 7th Street Underground as part of a larger campus social norming project.

Eric Davidson, director of Health and Human Resources, said “social norming is instead of telling the students what to do, they’re telling students what they’re doing.”

An example of this Davidson said is when students were asked to guess how many alcoholic beverages that Eastern students have in a week. They guessed approximately 10 to 20 drinks a week. However, the reality is that Eastern students on average have zero to four drinks per week, Davidson said.

Also working on this project is Katie Strejc of the University Board. The Student Senate will also be working on the project, but no members were present at Thursday’s meeting.

The 7th Street Underground Planning Committee’s goal is to provide a place to go on campus and hang out, while at the the same time dismissing the myth that you must drink when you go to college.

A possible plan for the 7th Street Underground is to have entertainment and refreshments while providing the students with an alternative besides frequenting the bars, Strejc said.

Currently, the new 7th Street Underground is still in the planning stages, Strejc said. The committee is working with the university on renovation plans for the facility.

The planning committee is looking for student input to make the project a success. Students can contact the Student Activity Center with any questions at 581-5117 or Davidson directly at 581-3912 with any suggestions.
