Percussion concert tonight

Twenty music majors will take the stage tonight for a 20th century percussion performance featuring selections ranging from punk rock to traditional Christmas favorites.

Music instructors Johnny Lane and Terence Mayhue will split the conducting duties for the Percussion Ensemble and the Latin Ensemble.

Lane is in his 28th year of directing at Eastern, and Mayhue recently began his third year.

The Marimba Rag Bands will also perform, but require no conductor, Mayhue said.

Mayhue wrote and arranged all the pieces for the Latin Ensemble, which will be ending the concert with songs by Robert Palmer, Billy Joel and Rancid.

Audience members will also recognize Christmas classics such as “Deck the Halls” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

“There’s going to be a lot of fun, energy, and excitement,” said Mayhue.”It’s not your typical concert, and it won’t be boring by any means.

“There will be something for everyone to enjoy and relate to.”

The performance will also include new pieces featuring piano parts. David Hobbes, professor of Eastern’s music department, will be the pianist for a selection called “Stained Glass,” Mayhue said.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Leo J. Dvorak Concert Hall of the Doudna Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
