Relocation and renovation

The editorial is the opinion of the editorial board of The Daily Eastern News.

Students without a car are left at the mercy of two things: a generous friend or the Panther Express. If you plan on traveling any further then the city limits of Charleston, then those stuck without a ride have few options of making it home during breaks.

So maybe you do have a car, but have another problem on your hands: finding a roommate to split the bills and the monthly rent of an apartment.

Thanks to a little bit of common sense, students in need of a ride home for the weekend, or a roommate for a semester, have gotten a helping hand from Student Senate.

Members of the senate’s Housing Committee realized there was a problem with the old rider/roommate board. The problem was the poor location of the board and the lack of knowledge about the service that was being offered.

The senate committee has set out to move the message board from the dark hallway leading into the under-construction food court area to a place that is a little more visible to students: directly across from First Mid-America’s banking location in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.

Members of the housing committee were right in the decision to update the look of the board and the location. They even took it a step further. Now, members of the committee have the responsibility of monitoring the board to see if people who are using the board are getting any response from it.

Committee members also plan to publicize the board with the hopes that more students can find a roommate or a ride home.

All the improvements to the rider/roommate board are great, but the board can fall back into not being used if members of the committee do not keep on top of monitoring it.

It is important the senate committee members check with students who have a request posted to see if and how they received the desired response. Without these contacts the rider/roommate board never will be used because senate members will not know how to fix the problems that may be occurring with the board.
