Students will have a variety of choices in next week’s Student Government elections. Three parties will vie for the positions on the executive board and the Student Senate to represent the student body for the next year. With four candidates for president and two to three candidates for every executive board position, students should easily be able to find students to represent their needs in Student Government.

The Student Pride party consists of Liela Morad, junior political science major, for student body president; Allison Mormino, junior political science major, for vice president for student affairs; Daryl Jones, senior speech communication major, for vice president for public affairs; Dwight Nelson, junior psychology major, for vice president for financial affairs; and Nina Samii, freshman biology major, for vice president for student affairs.

The party plans to establish unity and instill pride in the university if elected. Ideas include a city and campus volunteer project and working to get a 24-hour restaurant to Charleston.

The Student First Party consists of Hugh O’Hara, senior political science major, for student body president; Jessica Catto, junior communication disorders and sciences major, for vice president for academic affairs; Jen Fanthorpe, sophomore business management major, for vice president for financial affairs; Marty Ruhaak, freshman history major, for vice president for public affairs; and Yve Williams, junior speech communication major, for vice president for student affairs.

The party plans to work on projects like freezing tuition for incoming students, a co-curricular academic transcript and a car pool program. The transcript would allow the university to show what activities students are involved in on their transcripts and the car pool program would organize volunteers to provide students with a safe ride home late at night.

The Alpha Party is an all-greek party that hopes to solve the day-to-day frustrations that students face on campus, such as parking and air conditioning in buildings. The candidates include Paul Lytle, a junior speech communication major, for student body president; Rachel Foster a sophomore social science/sociology major, for vice president for public affairs; Joe Geocaris, junior English major, for vice president for academic affairs; and Megan Flickinger, a junior secondary education major for vice president for student affairs.

Members of the Alpha Party said they have significant experience in leadership roles within the greek community and would like to use that experience to serve all students. The party plans to solve problems for both greek and non-greek student alike.

Independent Peter Laesch is running for student body president, but his platform and goals are unknown.

The elections will be held Tuesday and Wednesday.
