City Council to vote on tax abatement Tuesday

Corryn Brock, News Editor

The Charleston City Council will vote on abating a tax completely during its meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

“It is necessary and in the best interests of the City of Charleston that the tax heretofore levied for the year 2019 to pay such debt service on the Bonds be abated,” according to the ordinance regarding the tax abatement.

The tax “did provide for the issue of $6,140,000 General Obligation Waterworks and Sewerage Refunding Bonds (Alternate Revenue Source), Series 2011 A (Prior Series 2003), and the levy of a direct annual tax sufficient to pay principal and interest on the Bonds.”

The council will also vote on two resolutions regarding closed session meetings.

Closed session meeting partial minutes from the following meetings will be released if the resolution is approved in the consent agenda.

The council is releasing the minutes because “it is no longer necessary to protect the public interest or the privacy of an individual by keeping them confidential and such Minutes, which were previously approved in closed sessions, are to be hereby released,” according to the resolution.

The destruction of audio and video from January 2, 2018 and March 6, 2018 closed session meetings.

The council will also vote on two resolutions more and two ordinances during its meeting.

A raffle license will also be included in the consent agenda for the meeting.

Following the action items, time is reserved for members of the public to address the council. No action will be taken on matters not listed on the agenda, and the Council is not required to take any further action or to discuss the matter further.

The council asks that those who choose to address the council speak into the microphone, limit the presentation to three minutes and avoid repetitive comments.
