Jessica Valenzuela, a senior Elementry Education student from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, climbs stairs back and forth on Wednesday evening at the Mellin Steps outside the Doudna Fine Arts Center.

Valenzuela said she does this to keep her body moving. She said she usually climbs stairs in the beat of a song she listens along with.

“Sometimes I just do a song (for stairs), then I’ll do something else. And sometimes I go fast and sometimes I go slow. It more depends on what I want to do,” she said.

Valenzuela said she was listening to Spanish dance music during her workout time today. Valenzuela is in the Golden Apple program now; she said she wants to teach math to students in the first grade.

Valenzuela said she found this program when she was in high school and applied when she was a senior; she has been in this program for three years now.
