EDITORIAL: Have a safe, fun break

Staff Editorial

We finally made it.

Even though this week has dragged, we at The Daily Eastern News want to be the first to say congratulations for surviving it.

As you start sneaking out of your dorms and classes to go home, wherever that may be, there are a few things we want you to keep in mind.

First, drive safe.

We know you hear it a lot, but, especially with the newly-fallen snow on the ground, this is the most important tip for everyone to keep in mind.

Don’t be pushy or get angry at slow drivers; everyone is just doing their best to get home safe.

Second, appreciate this time with your family by being in the moment.

Being in college (typically) means being away from family and loved ones for extended periods of time, so be fully appreciative of the time you do get to spend with them.

Put down the phone, turn off the TV and try to fill your days with all the quality time you have missed while killing yourself over an education here at Eastern.

On that same note, though, don’t be afraid to stand up to your family (you all know a person we are talking about): that person who has to bring up their beliefs the moment they see you, despite the fact you both know that you disagree strongly and perhaps their beliefs even alienate you.

Whoever that person is to you, do what you need to do to feel comfortable and safe over break and know that you are not alone. Ignore the pointed questions (What are you going to do once you graduate? Why are you not married yet?) and just try to enjoy the rare time you get with the family and friends you care about.

Third, try and be sensitive to the students who do not get to go home and see their families over break.

For whatever reason they do not get to go back home, just keep them in mind and do what you can to make sure they still feel safe and comfortable and loved over this break.

Overall, just take some time to rest and focus on self-care. Of course, many of us still have homework and big projects to work on over this upcoming week, but schedule work time around family time and time for yourself.

See you in a week, panthers; be safe and have an amazing break.
