Letter: Article on Chick-fil-A focused on overreaction

A Dec. 6 the headline in The Daily Eastern News read, “Chick-fil-A supports anti-gay groups.” It may as well have read, “Chick-fil-A funds Hitler’s cause.” America’s definition of freedom has suddenly become, “you’re all free to express your opinions and be who you want to be… unless it means you support something that goes against someone else’s beliefs.”

These days, you can’t burp without someone turning you in for being “offensive” to someone else. It’s interesting how these so-called “anti-gay” groups include Focus on the Family. I grew up listening to Dr. James Dobson and the last thing I ever thought about him was, “this guy’s a homophobe.”

Now maybe you just think I’m another radical Christian, but come on. When I think of anti-gay groups, I think of Neo-Nazis or legitimate radical Christian groups such as WBC. But no, this article accuses Chick-fil-A of supporting groups that show hatred towards gays.

Here’s a newsflash for you – if groups/businesses on campus can support pro-gay groups, then Chick-fil-A has every right to support Christian groups. Many Christian organizations happen to be against things like gay marriage, but it’s their right. And it’s Chick-fil-A’s right to take their money and support whatever organization they want to without getting kicked off campus – a place where freedom of belief is supposed to abound. And like one interviewee stated, if this were a racial issue, it would be a different story.
