Council proposes change in budget

The Charleston city council voted on a proposed 2011-2012 budget during Eastern’s spring break.

On March 15, the council placed the proposed city budget on file for public inspection and plans to vote on the budget during the April 19 meeting.

The 2011-2012 budget projects $25.6 million in revenues and $25 million in expenses.

Mayor John Inyart said he is excited about the balanced budget.

He said the budget does not have many capital projects except the wastewater treatment improvement project.

The current 2010- 2011 budget has $28.1 million in revenues and $27.6 million in expenses. If approved, the budget will become effective May 1.

The council approved a change order exceeding $85,000 for the wastewater treatment plant improvement project.

The city approved the Charleston City Roads Scholarships to 12 Eastern students.

The city also voted on authorizing a permanent easement for the Garfield Planned Unit Development.

The owner of Garfield Planned Unit Development planned to build an apartment complex but found a water line that requires the city to move the line.

The council also voted on the contract with Variety Attractions, Inc. Red, White and Blue Days.

The contract will allow the country musician Justin Moore to perform at July 3 for the Red, White and Blue Days in Charleston.

The city authorized the closure of certain streets for St. Charles Summer Start-Up festival.

The city also authorized the closure of certain streets for Delta Sigma Pi, a business fraternity, 5-K run and 1-mile fun run fundraiser.

The city approved the raffle licenses for St. Charles Catholic Church, Hope of East Central Illinois, Moose Lodge, Charleston FFA alumni and Brain Wilkerson Charity Fund.
