UB members resign, help needed

The start of the spring semester came with a few surprises for the University Board.

“We realize with University Board there is going to be transition with people coming in office and people leaving office,” said Ceci Brinker, University Board adviser. “That’s typical, but it was surprising coming into the spring semester, but understandable.”

The surprises that the board came across were the resignations of UB chair JC Miller, Cultural Arts Coordinator Andy Ho and Special Events Coordinator Katie Skaggs.

Miller started out with University Board during her freshmen year as a committee member and worked her way to Cultural Arts Coordinator to Vice Chair and finally Chair, but Miller had to look toward the future.

“I have been involved with UB for the entire time I have been here and I am a senior, and I am graduating, so I need to figure out what I need to do with my life outside of Eastern,” Miller said.

Miller went on to say that she most likely has an internship and would not have been able to take on the internship and act as the University Board Chair at the same time.

As for Ho, he said he resigned because of personal reasons, but said that his resignation had nothing to do with time and that there was no conflict between a board member or an adviser. Ho declined to make any other comment.

Skaggs said that she had a scheduling conflict that she could not rearrange.

University Board meets every Tuesday night and a coordinator cannot miss more than three meetings.

Skaggs had an art class that was required for her minor and tried to reschedule, but could not, she said.

With the resignation of Miller, the former Vice Chair Melissa Schaefer is stepping in as interim chair. The UB took nominations last week from people who were interested in interim vice chair.

The interim positions last until the end of the semester. Then UB will have elections for Chair and Vice Chair at the end of April, Brinker said.

Brinker also said that applications for the Cultural Arts Coordinator and the Special Events Coordinator are available to any student.

Miller, Ho and Skaggs resigned after winter break.

“All three brought very unique experiences,” Brinker said. “All three were very dedicated to UB. All three of them, based on their contributions, will be missed,” Brinker said.

Brinker said she will miss Miller, Ho, and Skaggs, but those sentiments go both ways.

“Every day I still think about it,” Miller said. “It’s one of those things that you have done for so long, that you still think in that mode.”
