UB hopes to jazz up dinner for area residents

The first step in bringing the Charleston community to University Board-sponsored events will happen appropriately enough at a dance.

The Miles 4 Monty Orchestra will perform at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Thursday at 7th Street Underground for “An Evening of Fine Dining and Dancing.” The four members of Miles are Nick Auriemmo, Mark Domanico, Adam Bockman and Tim Rush.

UB chair Caleb Judy said in a previous Daily Eastern News article that he wanted a broader audience to attend UB events. Although advertising on-campus has not differed, UB has placed a higher emphasis on the off-campus crowd.

Event coordinator Jennifer Kieffer said UB placed ads in the Charleston Times-Courier and the Mattoon Journal Gazette and put posters up in the community and in areas of high traffic.

“We are trying to get the community more involved with Eastern,” Kieffer said. “We want to let community members know that they are a part of our events too.”

The quartet will perform a 60 to 90-minute jazz routine during dinner, which as Kieffer states, will have a “Latin twist” to it.

“They have got a really cool Latin-influence. It’s not just jazz,” she said. “It’s actually kinda cool…I like it.”

The dinner will consist of chicken kied, pork tenderloin, baby-red potatoes, green beans and assorted cheesecake for dessert.

After dinner, a DJ will play music, and the dance floor will open up for the audience. Kieffer said the DJ will play jazz music, such as Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, but the music will become more contemporary as time passes.

The decision to bring Monty to Eastern was determined at a convention in October, Kieffer said.

“We saw them at a conference, and I thought they flowed really well,” she said. “They are all instrumental.”

Tickets are $5 for Eastern students and $7 for the general public.
