Faculty Senate to discuss enrollment

The Faculty Senate will discuss enrollment and enrollment management at Tuesday’s meeting.

Frank Hohengarten, dean of enrollment management and faculty representative on the enrollment management advisory committee, will visit the senate and outline the way the university approaches recruitment and enrollment, said Faculty Senate Chair Anne Zahlan, professor of English.

Zahlan said Hohengarten is in charge of establishing recruitment strategies for the university, including the type of students Eastern tries to attract and when to cut enrollment off.

Enrollment is a very important subject, Zahlan said, and effectively managing enrollment is one of interim President Lou Hencken’s top goals for next year.

“We were pleased the enrollment went up (this year), but we were surprised a little bit by the size of the freshman class,” Hencken said at last week’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Hencken said he wants to get the other two classes close to the same size as the freshman class and the senior class, which is almost always the largest.

Zahlan agreed this year’s enrollment was a bit of a surprise.

“We need a little more of a scientific system, so we know how to prepare for every class,” she said.

A discussion on health-care benefits funding concerns may not happen at today’s Faculty Senate meeting.

Last year, the state backed out of supporting health care for employees of public universities, including Eastern, and Zahlan said the senate would like to help exert political pressure to say this is not a good plan.

Zahlan may circulate a draft of resolutions supporting health-care benefits funding to be discussed at a future meeting.

The Faculty Senate also plans to draw up recommendations for the Board of Trustees regarding lessons of the last spring’s unsuccessful presidential search.

In the next couple of weeks, Zahlan said the senate would like to come up with suggestions for the BOT on what the faculty wants to see happen in the next presidential search, which is set to resume in April.

Suggestions for the Radio/TV Board and WEIU will be discussed by the Faculty Senate in the future as well.

The Faculty Senate meets at 2 p.m. every Tuesday in Booth Library Conference Room 4440.
