Southern student’s talent to ‘blow’ away art and craft fans

Celebration will also feature a slew of art and craft presentations and demonstrations, including glass blowing.

A group of undergraduate and graduate students from Southern Illinois University’s art department will blow molten glass to make vases, bowls and ornaments from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, said festival director Dan Crews.

“They’ll give a demonstration on how to take simple sand and blow it into glass,” he said. “It’s an interesting process to watch be because so many different colors and steps are used.”

The art students travel across the country with a furnace on wheels to bring the art to people. Crews said that the group may be auctioning off the pieces they make to observers.

In addition to the glass blowing demonstrations, Celebration will host over 50 artists from across the Midwest who sell jewelry, paintings, ceramics, pottery and a wide variety of other crafts all day Saturday and Sunday.

“You’re always guaranteed find something you like when you buy it from The Celebration,” he said. “Everything is very unique and you probably won’t find anything like it anywhere else.”
