Red Cross to hold blood drive at Andrews today, Wednesday

To those interested in helping save lives, the American Red Cross is sponsoring a blood drive Tuesday and Wednesday on campus.

The drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. on both days in the basement of Andrews Hall.

Bryan Miller, associate professor in the biological sciences department, said that any one who is “feeling healthy and over 110 pounds can donate.”

Tracy Torbeck of the American Red Cross said that donors need to be at least 16 years old and off of any antibiotics for 48 hours.

All blood types are needed, but Miller mentioned that there is always a need for type O blood.

Torbeck stated that there is a critical shortage of O-negative and B-negative blood.

Before donating, students are encouraged to drink more fluids, especially juice or water, and eat well to have a “more pleasant experience,” Miller said.

“The most important thing is to have something in their stomachs,” said Torbeck.

Donors could also boost their iron levels before they donate by eating leafy green vegetables and red meat, Torbeck noted.

In addition after donating blood, students should take it easy, drink plenty of fluids and eat well, she said.

Torbeck also said that those who wish to donate will go through a short physical and health history with a member of the American Red Cross.

Papa John’s will provide free pizza for all donors.

The Mortar Board is sponsoring Tuesday’s drive, and Lambda Theta Alpha and Alpha Theta Phi is sponsoring Wednesday’s drive.
