A fine time to debut

An Eastern graduate student will host her first music composition recital Tuesday night.

Elaine Fine, a composition major, composed all of the music that will be played at the Dvorak Concert Hall in the Doudna Fine Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.

Fine said that she has participated in a composer’s forum, which features the works of different Eastern music students, but this is her first time hosting a recital that features all of her own pieces.

Fine mentioned that her pieces feature voice, piano, violin, cello, viola, flute, clarinet and other woodwind parts. Fine will play the viola in one of her songs.

Fine said that all of her pieces are “harmonically rich.”

“About 20 years ago, there was a period when music was full of complete chaos,” she said. “I’m trying to bring a more harmonic feel to my pieces.”

Fine mentioned that she tries to allow the people who play her music to be “expressive.”

“I try to create music that makes people feel good,” she said.

Fine also commented that her music is “not romantic sounding,” but “accessible” to everyone.

“My music is not difficult to understand,” she said. “My recital is full of very short pieces.”

Fine has been “seriously” writing music for nine years and has been studying under Peter Hesterman, a professor in the music department, for three years.

Admission to the recital is free and open to the public.
