Student chosen for ‘Letter to the Front’

Kathleen May, a freshman middle level education major, will be awarded tomorrow for her “Letter to the Front.”

“Letters to the Front” is a letter-writing contest put on by the Defense Commissary Agency that was chosen by a University Foundations class to be their citizenship project. For the project, the students wrote a letter to military men and women stationed overseas, Deb Woodley, professor School of Technology, said Wednesday.

May won the contest in her class, which she will be recognized for with a certificate, t-shirt and letter Thursday in the Lantz Fieldhouse at 4 p.m., and is entered into the world-wide contest where she can win up to a $2,000 scholarship, Woodley said.

The class first heard of “Letters to the Front” through Eastern’s ROTC program.

The letters are sent to troops in Kosovo, Bosnia and the demilitarized zone of South Korea, along with other areas from which troops are deploying for the current war on terrorism.Master Sgt. David J. McKinney spoke to the students about what it’s like to be a 19-year-old stationed overseas.

After McKinney spoke, the class choose “Letters from the Front” as their community service project, Woodley said.
